Our Story

Coffee & The Cats began with a simple vacation—and a life-changing visit to a cat café in Laguna Beach.

We had heard about cat cafés around the world, but experiencing one for ourselves was something entirely different. We fell in love with the peaceful atmosphere, the opportunity to spend time with adoptable shelter cats, and the idea that something as simple as enjoying a great cup of coffee could help animals find loving homes.

​

From that moment on, visiting cat cafés became part of our travels wherever we went. Each one inspired us, and each visit planted the seed for something we hoped to bring home one day.

That opportunity came in December 2023.

​

One family member was expanding their business interests and completing a culinary arts degree, and another was finishing a business degree and another had been working for years as a barista. One evening, while gathered around a pizza, we asked ourselves a simple question:

"What could we build together that truly reflects who we are?"

The answer was clear.

For nearly a decade, our family had volunteered with the Humane Society of the Black Hills, sharing our love of animals with our children and watching firsthand the incredible work being done to help homeless cats. Combining that passion with artisan coffee, handcrafted food, and hospitality felt like the perfect fit.

Just a few months later, Coffee & The Cats opened its doors in April 2024.

Today, we're proud to partner with the Humane Society of the Black Hills to provide adoptable cats with a welcoming, home-like environment where they can relax, play, and meet potential families. Every visit helps create more opportunities for cats to be seen, loved, and adopted.

But our vision has always been about more than coffee.

We believe creativity has the power to bring people together just as much as compassion does. Alongside artisan coffee, handcrafted drinks, and delicious food, we've built a place where people can enjoy art classes, murder mystery dinners, live performances, workshops, themed events, and gatherings that celebrate creativity and community.

As we've grown, so has our vision. Through our partnership with the Emporium, we've expanded our space to showcase creative finds, antique books, unique gifts, handcrafted goods, comics and creative experiences that support Coffee and the Cats while visitors even more reasons to explore.

Our newest addition, the Mini Mewseum, celebrates the fascinating history, science, art, and culture of cats through interactive exhibits and playful displays designed to delight visitors of all ages.
