The Ultimate Guide to Cat Cafe Etiquette If you're a cat lover and a coffee enthusiast, then visiting a cat cafe is a dream come true! Coffee and the Cats, opening in the Spring of 2024 in Rapid City, will offer the perfect blend of delicious coffee and the opportunity to spend time with adorable feline friends. However, it's important to remember that cat cafes are not your typical coffee shops. To ensure a positive experience for both you and the cats, here's the ultimate guide to cat cafe etiquette. 1. Respect the cats' personal space: While it's tempting to shower the cats with attention, remember that they are living beings with their own boundaries. Give them space when they need it, and let them come to you. If a cat is sleeping or hiding, it's best to leave them be and interact with the ones who are more active and willing to engage. 2. Be gentle and mindful: When petting the cats, be gentle and avoid any rough or aggressive behavior. Cats have sensitive bodies, so be mindful of their comfort. Avoid pulling their tails, ears, or whiskers, and always ask the staff for guidance if you're unsure about the best way to interact with a particular cat. 3. Follow the rules, here are a few of ours:
Cats must remain in the Kitty Cove play area (don't let them into the food prep and main dining area- no matter what they try to tell you).
Outside cats or dogs are not allowed at the cafe. This is so our kitties can enjoy a consistent, mellow experience at the cafe before finding their forever homes.
Practice good hygiene: Coffee and the Cats prioritizes cleanliness to maintain a healthy environment for the cats. Before entering the cat area, sanitize your hands thoroughly using the provided hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your face or any personal belongings while interacting with the cats, and always wash your hands after your visit.
Respect Boundaries: Cats, like humans, have personal space preferences. Some cats may be social butterflies, while others may be a bit more reserved. It’s important to observe their body language and respect their boundaries. If a cat seems disinterested or is showing signs of discomfort, it’s best to give them their space.
Â
Mind the Tail: A cat’s tail can communicate their emotions. A relaxed, upright tail typically indicates they are happy and open to interaction. On the other hand, a swishing or puffed-up tail can signify agitation or fear. Avoid pulling or tugging on a cat’s tail, as this can cause discomfort and potentially harm them.
Â
Be Mindful of Food and Drinks: Cat cafés often serve delicious treats and beverages, but it’s essential to keep your snacks and drinks away from the feline residents. Cats have specific dietary requirements, and it’s crucial that they stick to their regular meals to maintain their health.
Â
Listen to the Staff: Our staff is passionate about the well-being of our feline residents. We will provide you with guidelines and instructions to ensure a harmonious environment for both visitors and cats. It’s important to listen attentively and follow our guidance to guarantee a positive experience for everyone involved.
 4. Support the cafe: Coffee and the Cats partners with the Black Hills Humane Society to provide a home for cats in need. Show your support by purchasing food, drinks, or merchandise. Consider making a donation or participating in our adoption events to help these cats find loving homes. 5. Enjoy the experience: Cat cafes are designed to be relaxing and enjoyable spaces for both cats and humans. Take your time to savor your coffee, observe the cats' behavior, and engage in gentle play. Appreciate the unique atmosphere and the joy of spending time with these furry companions. Visiting a cat cafe is a wonderful way to combine your love for coffee and cats. By following these etiquette tips, you can ensure a positive experience for yourself, the cats, and the cafe staff. We're so excited that within the next couple of months, you will be able to grab a cup of coffee, find a cozy spot, and let the feline magic unfold at Coffee and the Cats!
